Green Canteen: A vega(n) haven in Noord

Only a 5-minute bike ride away from the Ijplein ferry, the Green Canteen is located in one of the less explored parts of the North of Amsterdam. Surrounded by warehouses and houses alike, the area is a more residential version of its cooler Northern sibling, NDSM. Extra points for the location, because it’s right opposite the Oedipus brewery! Only one of the coolest breweries in Amsterdam. Green Canteen is humble and true, serving only vegan and vegetarian options. The interior of the eatery is small and intimate, with a simple décor, just a few tables and an open kitchen. There’s also a terrace with a couple of tables, in case you want to grab that afternoon sun.

Green Amsterdam - vegan hotspot Green Canteen Amsterdam Noord Food terraceGreen Canteen serves ‘Veggie food with attitude’

“Veggie food with attitude” their logo reads. And it really is! Unpretentious, hearty, filling, delicious food. Their menu praises eastern flavors, particularly North African and Middle Eastern, yet there’s a clear nod to an Indonesian style. The staple dishes include pita with falafel, hummus, shakshuka, and baked aubergine. But the fun part about Green Canteen is that the rest of their menu changes periodically, depending on the produce in season and on availability, so you can always try new things in every visit.

Try the ‘Bobotok’, one of the staples (a green cabbage wrap with coconut tempeh filling, traditional Javanese). Surprise yourself with the seasonal Indonesian meals – think ‘Lontong Sayur’ and ‘Brijani’ style curry with crunchy veggies.

Sustainable Eating

Did you know that food is the third greenhouse gas emitter globally? Nearly 40% of what is produced gets thrown in the trash. This is why we need a change in attitude, both as individuals and the food industry. Kai, the owner of the Green Canteen is paving the way to a more ethical direction. Most of the vegetables used are not just seasonal, but also surplus amounts from suppliers, thus contributing to the fight against food waste and helping save the planet. Oh, and if you want a receipt, they can e-mail it to you, because printing paper is a waste!

So how about we start considering the planet a little bit more next time we go out for lunch or dinner? If you want to enjoy some of that nourishing goodness, you can drop by the Green Canteen from 11:00 – 21:00 Monday to Friday, and 12:00 – 17:00 on Saturdays. They also make fresh smoothies and aromatic home-made teas!
