Would you like to wear more sustainable clothes? Green Amsterdam’s exploring brands that are friendly for the environment and this time we’re taking a closer look at Swedish brand Fjällräven.
Fjällräven, which means arctic fox in Swedish, sells outdoor clothing and equipment since the 1960’s. Throughout the years Fjällräven has proven their products last for a life time because of the high quality materials being used and their timeless designs. They even aim to make products that can be worn for multiple generations.
Fjällräven has been working on their sustainable development for years now, using more and more recycled, organic materials and PFC-free impregnation. “So what’s PFC?” I hear you think. Well, PFC’s are toxic chemicals which are used in most outdoor clothing because of its water and dirt resistant function. Unfortunately when wearing such clothes outdoors, PFC ends up in the environment. And because PFC’s spread easily and break down very slowly, they are ending up in nature, animals, the food chain, humans, mountain lakes, snow and so on…. Enough reasons to stop wearing clothes with these hazardous chemicals, right?
Bag made of Plastic Bottles
A beautiful example of a sustainable Fjällräven product is the Re-Kånken backpack. This is the super sustainable version of the much popular Kanken backpack, which you can’t have missed in the city streets. In their constant mission to improve, Fjällräven designed a more sustainable variant of their most famous product. And so the Re-kanken was born, made of recycled plastic bottles! Each Re-Kanken backback is made of eleven wasted plastic bottles. Watch the design story of the Re-Kånken here
Dutch Winter Proof
In search of a sustainable coat suitable for Dutch winter? Then the Kiruna Padded Parka is a great choice because of its water and wind resistant material G-1000, including a recycled polyamide lining. The sustainable G1000 fabric is tightly woven and fast drying as well. It’s a great coat for wearing on the bike since it’s comfortably warm, thanks to the light synthetic padding. At the same time it ventilates and breathes very well and doesn’t get too hot and steamy when you’re cycling. Besides, the model is long for warmth over the thighs and the design plus available colors are timeless, so you can wear it for years.
